Keepin' it Real

This is Jane, my coworker and good friend.   Jane and I both have a strong love for ice cream so we decided to hit up the DQ one day on our lunch breaks.  Best idea we ever had!
Cookie Dough blizzard on a hot summer afternoon= Mmmm, happiness!

Last weekend, I went to my first auction and first demolition derby. Both of these events are very "Midwestern" like activities. The auction was held at a big barn-looking warehouse. Both on the lawn outside and in the warehouse were mounds of stuff. Furniture, christmas lights, little kid's toys, knives, guns, kitchen ware, mattresses, and cowboy gear were all in abundance. Joe and I (and our friends) got a number that we could hold up if we wanted to bid on something.  It was really hard to understand the auctioneer though.  He spoke so quickly and I never really knew what price he was calling out for things.

Joe and I were each going to see if we could find something (just for fun) for like $5.00 and we went around discussing the items we were interested in.  Well, I was surprised when Joe unexpectedly started bidding on an air soft gun.
He got it for $4.00! Don't be fooled... it's way old and will probably barely work.  It's not nice whatsoever. When I walked over to him to ask him why he just bought an airsoft gun, he said it was to hit the cats that poop on our yard. And yes, he's very excited about it.

Joe also got a hand held table saw for $12.50. It too is old, but it works and he has wanted one many a time for home repair projects. I didn't end up getting anything.  I kind of wanted to get a small rocking chair just to have a wood project to sand, paint, and stain.  I have been wanting to try doing that with some kind of furniture and a I thought a rocking chair was a small enough first project and it would fit in our house. (We are pretty full up in our house, if you can believe it.) Sorry no pictures of the auction.

On Saturday, we went to the demolition derby at the state fair. I had never been to one, but I guess Joe had been to a couple in bear lake when he was a teenager.  It was crazy.
A bunch of junker cars putted their way out into a dirt pit arena, waited for the count down, and then played bumper cars in an attempt to ruin each other's vehicles to the point that they wouldn't run anymore.

Only one caught fire a little bit. Most of them shredded their tires and smashed in their rear ends completely.  Bumpers fell off, fluids sprayed from the hood, and two cars actually got stuck together when one went up on top of the other's bumper end.
It was very entertaining... something I had never seen the likes of before.

Joe really wanted to try a funnel cake.  He had never had one before and I don't think he'll ever have one again.  There's just something about fried food that is not very appetizing.

Here we are: Maegan, Dan, Joe, and Me sweatin' it up in the heat!
Before it was over, big gusts of wind rolled in and dark clouds.
It was amazing how quickly the stands cleared. Joe looked on his iphone to look at the doplar reading and saw a nasty storm coming, which could just miss us or hit us right on.
People in the Midwest don't mess with storms. We were out of there fast and watched lightning stretch out both vertically and horizontally across the sky as we drove home.
Funny thing is, it just sort of blew over, never really becoming of much more than that.

Speaking of Joe and his iphone... that thing is a chick magnet!! There we were, helping out in nursery on Sunday, and I look over and see this.  He's every three year-old girl's dream now!
